Nostalgising anyone?

It might sound like an odd term, but hear us out. We are talking about the power of nostalgia, and more specifically, how to use it to command attention and engagement for your brand. Nostalgia marketing, if you prefer.

Rather than feeling outdated, nostalgic design and messaging tap into fond memories and offer a sense of comfort. When executed well, this strategy provokes an emotional response, helping brands connect with audiences in a more meaningful way. The nostalgic trigger could be anything from a TV show or music video to a typeface or cultural icon.

The Emotional Power of Nostalgia

Nostalgia evokes positive emotions by reconnecting people with familiar moments or visuals from their past. This emotional bond increases trust and comfort, making audiences more receptive to your message.

As a result, nostalgia marketing can:

  • Increase engagement
  • Boost social shares
  • Strengthen long-term brand loyalty

It turns out, revisiting the past can be a powerful way to build relevance in the present.

Our Retro Gaming Campaign

When Systematic wanted to reach out to new contacts with a promotional campaign, oodle designed a creative concept built around retro gaming.

The star of the campaign was a sleek, high-quality power bank, wrapped in a custom-designed sleeve that channelled the visual language of classic video games. We used:

  • 8-bit graphics
  • Vibrant colours
  • Playful pixelated icons

This approach appealed across generations. For some, it sparked memories of the original gaming era. For others, the retro aesthetic had strong visual appeal, thanks in part to its resurgence on platforms like TikTok and YouTube.

To amplify the impact, we added a two-sided postcard with a design that encouraged recipients to keep, display or share it. This tangible element helped extend the lifespan of the campaign on desks, pinboards and in conversations.

Extending the Theme with Animation

To bring the concept to life digitally, we created a series of short animations shared through email marketing and social media. These added movement, sound and interactivity to the campaign, increasing digital engagement.

This wasn’t just a fun design decision. It was a strategic move that helped us connect emotionally with a wide audience and boost brand visibility. Sometimes, looking back really can be the best way to move forward.

How to Apply Nostalgia to Your Brand

Nostalgia is not one-size-fits-all. Whether you use classic typefaces, vintage design styles or nods to cultural moments, the concept can be tailored to suit your brand and audience.

Ideas include:

  • Reviving old packaging designs
  • Referencing retro advertising styles
  • Incorporating visual elements from popular eras
  • Tapping into collective cultural memories

With creativity and intention, nostalgia can be a memorable and effective part of your marketing strategy.
